We received a call from the purchasing department of a school system that had bought some asset tags from a competitor of ours that they found on the internet. They bought a few thousand tags from this company and started tagging their equipment.

So how do you know your tags will stick forever?
4 things to look for in your asset tags:
- Strong adhesive – There are many different types of adhesives on the market. Some companies will use fancy numbers and codes for the adhesives they put on their tags. They think the fancier the number, the better the hold. Don’t be fooled. Some companies advertise that they use 3M adhesive or equivalent. That’s like saying you will get a Cadillac, a Kia, or equivalent. If you are using 3M’s #9627 adhesive transfer tape on your tags, you will sleep good at night because it is the best adhesive transfer tape that 3M makes which is why we use it on every one of the premium asset tags we make.
- Durable coating – Probably the second most important feature is the coating. The coating should be chemical-resistant, water-proof, and scratch-resistant. Lexan wins the most durable coating prize. It’s the same stuff bullet proof glass and jet fighter windshields are made from. Lexan is even more durable than aluminum. Aluminum tags are prone to scratching because aluminum is a soft metal. If the aluminum is scratched it will oxidize, making the tag unreadable. If you buy aluminum tags from us they won’t scratch or oxidize because they are coated with Lexan.
- High quality printing – Of course, asset tags are only as good as what they communicate. If the printed text, barcodes, and logo can’t be read, it’s virtually worthless. Make sure the printing on your tags is high enough quality that it won’t fade with sun and age.
